Breakfast is often considered the most important meal of the day.
And for many, it’s their favourite.
So when Reddit user ‘Blackberry-777’ asked the forum, ‘Which country has the best traditional breakfast?’ there was, unsurprisingly, no shortage of answers.
From the place with diners serving ‘half a pig’s worth of bacon’ to the country that does a Full English, ‘but with better coffee’, there are plenty of contenders for the title.
Let us know your favourite dish in the comments… and don’t forget to vote in our poll.
UK
Although conversation starter ‘Blackberry-777’ says the ‘Full English’ with ‘bacon, eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, beans, buttered toast, sausages and black pudding’ is their favourite, the UK didn’t fare so well with others.
Reddit users have been sharing the countries they think have the world’s best breakfast. The UK’s Full English is a winning breakfast for one Reddit user
‘Losdelacosta’ says the answer is ‘not England’, while another user says that America’s version of the English breakfast is ‘better in every way’.
‘Tlc0330’ disagrees, remarking that you’ll find the best version of a UK breakfast in Scotland on the NC500 road trip route.
They explain: ‘The Full Scottish (Full English with haggis) breakfasts we were served every morning were delicious.’
Mexico
Mexico has the right breakfast to get up and go, according to several Reddit users.
One deleted user writes that they’re ‘partial’ to the country’s chilaquiles when the sun rises. The dish is made from fried corn tortillas, which are topped with cheese and condiments.
Mexico’s ‘chilaquiles’ (pictured above) are an ‘amazing’ way to start the day for several Reddit users
‘JadeBlueAfterburn’ reveals: ‘I was in Cancun for vacation last year. Easily put on 17 pounds/7kg because I had chilaquiles every d*** morning for breakfast. It was amazing and I would totally do it again.’
Meanwhile, ‘JohnDoee94’ says: ‘I could eat chilaquiles every morning. I judge a Mexican restaurant’s food by how good the chilaquiles are. If you can nail that, I can trust the rest of the menu!’
Lebanon
Lebanon’s hummus and yoghurt-based morning fodder pleases two of the contributors.
‘Lmautochillen’ says: ‘Lebanese breakfast is great. Labneh (strained yoghurt), foul (fava beans with lemon and herbs), hummus, manakish (flavoured flatbread) with zaatar (a spice mix that includes herbs, sesame seeds and salt) or white thyme. Just the best to start your day.’
‘ShirtyDot’ adds that three of their ‘top meals’ were enjoyed in Beirut, the Lebanese capital.
Canada and the USA
The North American breakfast of pancakes with maple syrup and bacon can’t be beaten, according to one Reddit user
Canada’s breakfast is syrup-ly the best for user ‘Etgohomeok’, who says: ‘You can pry my pancakes and sausages with maple syrup out of my cold dead Canadian hands.’
‘Buitenlander0’ believes the U.S can’t be beaten for breakfast, saying: ‘American diners are a true gem.
‘I’ve been living abroad and there is no place like the American diner, especially the endless cups of coffee.’
And ‘JanGuillosThrowaway’ sums it up thus: ‘We can hate on North American cuisine as much as we want, but when it comes to breakfast nothing beats the 2,000-calorie pancakes with maple syrup and half a pig’s worth of bacon you can get in a diner.’
Turkey
Turkish breakfast is ‘hands down’ the best, in user ‘Whatchymacaller’s opinion.
‘Retrooo’ explains: ‘It’s a large spread of different breads, cakes, pastries, cheese, spreads, jams, yoghurt, sausages, olives, eggs in different preparations, fruits and salads with coffee and or tea.’
And it’s a winner for non-meat eaters, too. ‘English_major’ adds: ‘I am vegetarian and the Turks make the best veggie breakfast anywhere – egg, bread, tomatoes, cucumber, feta and bread.’
Singapore
Singapore’s kaya toast breakfast (pictured above) is ‘one of the best brekkies’, according to one user
There’s plenty to sing about when it comes to Singapore’s breakfast.
‘T3apot’, for instance, raves about the city-state’s ‘kaya toast’.
Kaya toast is a traditional breakfast in Singapore, consisting of toast, coconut jam, boiled eggs and a coffee.
It’s usually served at a ‘kopitiam’, a type of casual coffee shop popular in Singapore.
‘Laamarjachica’ adds: ‘Kopitiam culture is the best. That thick buttered toast dipped in half-boiled eggs with a tinge of soy sauce and white pepper. One of the best brekkies!’
Australia
Australia is serving an elevated version of the Full English ‘but with good coffee’, claims ‘shadysnore’.
While ‘Missilefire’ adds that ‘Aussie brunches’ are ‘superior to anywhere in the world’.
Germany
Germany’s white sausage, pretzel and beer breakfast (pictured above) will leave you ‘feeling ready for hiking or taking a nap – no in between’
Germany is one of the best places to start the day, according to ‘Thegdouble’, who says they love the country’s weisswurst (white sausage), ‘a soft pretzel with sweet mustard, and wheat beer’.
However, ‘Feuer606’ warns: ‘The only downside is you either feel ready for hiking the Alps or taking a nap after – no in between.’
Japan
Japan’s breakfast is worth travelling for, it would seem.
‘Pggraczer’ explains: ‘Japanese breakfasts are pretty good. Rice, omelette, miso, natto (fermented soybeans) and tea.’
For ‘DllmonL79’, it’s also an aesthetically pleasing way to start the day. They add: ‘Love a neat presentation, too. Small dishes of pickles, condiments, eggs, a bowl of miso, some seasonal grilled fish and a bowl of rice, plus some sliced fruits, all in one tray.’
India
India’s range of spicy options for breakfast get one deleted user fired up.
They rave about the country’s ‘dosas (savoury pancake), paratha (flatbread), masala omelette (spiced omelette), egg bhurji (spicy scrambled eggs) and theplas (spiced flatbreads) with fresh butter’.
India’s breakfast is a popular choice, with egg bhurji (spicy scrambled eggs) a top recommendation (pictured above)
Japan’s ‘neatly’ presented breakfast (pictured above) makes it a contender for one user
India’s filter coffee also gets the seal of approval, from ‘627things’, who describes it as ‘so good’, while ‘biteyourankles’ adds, ‘You haven’t lived if you have not had a fresh paratha and chai for breakfast.’
Malaysia
In Malaysia, it’s sarawak laksa that can’t be missed, according to Reddit user ‘Lucapal1’, who says it’s a ‘truly great breakfast’.
Sarawak laksa is a noodle soup with chilli, ginger, tamarind and coconut milk.
‘Hotasianfox’ adds: ‘Laksa for breakfast is the best.’
