So says travel expert Abby Dunn, who has travelled to Florida over 40 times and shared 13 locations outside of these cities you may have never heard of – but that have lots to offer holidaymakers.

Abby, marketing manager at Ocean Florida, reveals one of the few places in the world where people can swim year-round with manatees, ‘serene islands’ with ‘pristine shorelines’ and shopping havens brimming with designer boutiques.

Abby says: ‘If you’re looking for a party-centric girls trip to Florida, Ybor City, Tampa, is a great option. This historic neighbourhood is famous for its vibrant bars and clubs and is sure to keep you dancing all week long.

‘If you’re looking to immerse yourself in some culture, you won’t be short of it in this district. Known as the “Cigar Capital of the World”, you can visit cigar shops, watch cigars being rolled, and even take a cigar factory tour for a truly unique experience.’

Ybor City is also a culinary hotspot and Abby recommends sampling an ‘authentic Cuban sandwich’ while there. 

 Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale is perfect for travellers who are in their ‘relaxation era’, says Abby. She adds: ‘It provides plenty of beautiful beaches and things to do, but with less partying and busy crowds.

‘Your group can take advantage of Las Olas Boulevard, a vibrant street filled with shops, restaurants and bars, while also enjoying its extensive canal system, which makes for peaceful boat tours around the city.’ 

It’s also home to one of the USA’s largest shopping malls, Sawgrass Mills, which Abby says is ‘perfect for those needing some retail therapy’. 

 Clearwater Beach

Abby says: ‘If your girl group is a mix of activity lovers and relaxers then Clearwater Beach is a great choice. As well as offering powdery white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, there’s plenty of access to water activities such as parasailing and dolphin-watching, so the doers won’t get bored.

‘It’s also in close proximity (five minutes) to the Clearwater Aquarium, which offers a great day out at a slower pace, while Busch Gardens Tampa Bay [theme park] is an hour’s drive away – [it offers] thrilling rides to pass the afternoon. 

‘A final perk – flying into Tampa over Orlando could save you around £80-£100 per person!’

Best for a romantic getaway

 Key West

Key West, the USA’s most southern city, has a ‘real Caribbean influence’ with ‘stunning palm trees but a busy atmosphere’, says Abby. She says it’s ‘perfect for couples looking for that hustle and bustle in a beautiful setting’. 

The Florida expert adds: ‘There’s plenty to explore and see in Key West, making it easy to fill your itinerary. M

‘Mallory Square hosts daily sunset celebrations including street performances and local vendors to enjoy, as well as plenty of oceanfront dining options. Couples looking for some adventure can enjoy snorkelling, diving and sailing in its waters.’
